First, let me start by saying something in case anyone thinks otherwise: I love my olive green velvet sofa. It wasn’t particularly trendy when I got it nearly 5 years ago now but I did one thing right and that was I bought something I absolutely loved. I’ve had a bit of a ‘thing’ for olive green for a long time (like going back to the 90s) and even though you don’t see it very often in my interiors, it’s a colour I have ALWAYS loved and velvet? Yes please, I would cover my house in it if I could. And as for the Chesterfield style? Well, deep buttoned anything always makes me swoon. So, of course I love my sofa and it’s not like I’m thinking of replacing it any time soon…
And yet.
I mean, you’re melting into a little pool of drool right? Yep, me too. Ya see,Β I noticed something recently on my Living Rooms board on Pinterest (and if you aren’t following me, you should really just go ahead and do that right now. I’ll wait………………. Okay done? Great.)
I can’t stop myself pinning navy blue velvet sofas.
I mean, I’ve beenΒ crushing hard on deep blue for a while. Β My dining room was painted deep blue in 2013 so it was actually prior to it becoming a big trend but I’m certainly not saying I’m some kind of trend-setter here (I actually saw it done in two other blogger’s homes prior to me taking the plunge so if anything, they are the trend setters). But despite it becoming quite a big trend towards the end of 2014 and is being proclaimed as the newΒ blackΒ for 2015, I am still in love with it (I can be quite finicky when it comes to trends – once it’s everywhere, I tire of it. Oh dear.)
So when I see deep blue mixed with velvet on a sofa? I’m all over it. (Not literally, that would just be weird – I mean, I don’t even know these people, can you imagine? “Oh my god what are you doing in my house?!” “What? I just wanted to cuddle your sofa….” *cue horrified expression of homeowner*)
I actually feel BAD about this. Like I’m betraying my own beautiful sofa. But… well, I can’t help myself. Is it okay to have an affair with another colour velvet if my sofa doesn’t find out so is therefore not hurt? The moral dilemma of my life right now. It feels so wrong… and yet feels so right.
Don’t you just want to squish your face into it? Of if you have rather more class than I do, perhaps sit delicately whilst sipping a pink martini in a vintage gold rimmed glass before throwing back your head to laugh in way that’s both sexy and unassuming?
Have you ever had a torrid lust for a piece of furniture that you have no intention of getting? Are you also deeply in love with navy blue velvet? Perhaps you have a navy blue velvet sofa and if so, can I come over and squish my face in it? I promise there will be no awkwardness and we’ll never speak of it again.

I wrote a very similar post a while ago because I so feel the same way. And the blue velvet reminds me of my parents. We had a blue velvet sofa when I was little with the coolest persian rugs on the floor. Boy were they trendy and I didn’t even know it ;)
Wow, your parents sound AWESOME. We had a massive persian rug growing up as well and my mom always decorated with lots of ethnic prints – we had these two massive oil paintings of Spanish bullfighters that I really wish I had now. Never appreciated it until I grew up! lol xx
i just bought an amazing vintage one and i can’t wait to get it home!!!!!!! EEK! i love them all!
Oh Cassie, I’m green now with envy!! Once it arrives, you may find me in your house squishing my face in it. Just a little warning. xxx
Everyone’s got a girl crush on Emily Henderson and her navy sofa’s hah! I’ve loved navy forever too, did a little chair makeover with deep buttoning way back in 2013 long before I even knew who Emily Henderson was…love the sofas above, but a word of warning the velvet does pick up any kind of dust or fluff, but easy to remove with a lint roller. They are gorgeous though!
I have 2 pieces of velvet furniture and yep, they do pick up a bit of fluff but definitely worth the little bit of effort to keep them gorgeous! Love it! :D xxx
If I had one you’d be welcome to come squish your face into it – I much prefer yours though. x
Awww you are a star, my dear!! LOL! Thank you ;) xxx
Navy anything makes me swoon. I painted the kitchen and living room walls of our last house navy and I loved them. As for navy velvet sofas..#ohhellyes. So So good. Id love one, but it wouldn’t last a week in my house between my kids and puppy. Im holding out for when they are older. In the meantime, Ive really gotta figure out something because we need a sofa so bad.
I’m just lusting from afar myself but I’m pretty sure there are some great velvet alternatives out there that are easier to keep clean from little hands and feet! ;) xxx
Pic Nr.5 has it all! <3
Now I also want one. thx a lot. :-P :-D
I know!! I think I gasped when I saw that picture! Just SO SO GOOD! And you’re welcome ;) lol xxx
Oh yes, I love blue/navy velvet sofa too. It’s so classy, sophisticated and glamour:)
It really is! I can’t see this love abiding any time soon… *swoon* xxx
My dear, velvet FTabsoluteW. I buy velvet any chance I can. Clothes, pillows, shoes, throws, pillows, pillows and tiny storage boxes that I’ll never actually use but you never know, so I have 20 of them. Oh and pillows. Velvet turns me into a cat; the moment I see velvet I will run over and start kneading it and I will make inappropriate sounds with my mouth.
I wildly appreciate the navy aspect muchly. And I whole-heartidly agree with you on the deep-buttoned anything. It just feels so much fancier.
I do have one Q for you – how has your velvet couch held up*? In my head, I’d be worried of buying velvet furniture as I’d think it would wear down. But that’s my thoughts from lack of velvet furniture experience.
Hahaha!! The funny thing is, the cats leave it alone because they can’t get their claws into it so you can knead all ya like my dear and your nails will not damage the precious beauty of it! And I have to say, it’s held up really well. The velvet nap on the back (where your back would be when you sit) gets pressed a bit and develops a wonderful shine which I think just adds to the character and the seats I turn every week – and they still look as good as when I bought them. So after nearly 5 years, it still looks great. It doesn’t look ‘worn and old’ at all, it just looks loved ;) xxx
This is just what I needed to hear to reinforce my love of velvet. I can’t wait to grow up and decorate our eventual house in all of the velvet.
p.s. Did I mention Robert hates velvet? It makes him physically ill. Ooops.
Ooh you know how I feel about blue velvet sofas! I’m determined to get one when the boys are a little older… till then I’ll tolerate the ugly brown one and let them destroy it all they want ;-)
Blue velvet and I have been making googly eyes at each other for years now.
Our black leather sectional recently got … uh … rather peed on by one of our cats, and I was secretly hoping it would have to be replaced! I have also considered blue velvet side chairs, but I’m afraid that only a blue velvet sofa may quench my thirst.
